Thomas Larry Beavers Sr., age 80, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on the night of June 24, 2022, while in the care of his family. He was born on May 16, 1942, in Prentiss, Mississippi to Tom and Beatrice Beavers where he was raised with four other siblings. It was here that Larry learned the values of hard work and understood the responsibility of providing for his family. Larry then expanded his family when he married Edna Joyce Scallion on March 13, 1964, as their marriage was later blessed with three children: Delores, Thomas, and Wayne Beavers, who then later gave back to him five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Larry, being the earnest laborer he was, always had multiple jobs at any given moment, but it was the professions that allowed him to give back to his country, community, and family that he cherished the most. At only 17 years old, Larry enlisted in the United States Army where he served with the 268th Signal Company, located in Korea during the Vietnam War, from July 1959 to July 1962. While in service, Larry briefly worked as a military police officer but spent most of his service as a tank driver.
After Larry completed his service and was honorably discharged, he came home and adapted back to civilian life by settling down and marrying the love of his life, Edna Joyce. During their 56 years together, Larry held other positions in various occupations that serviced his community. Larry worked and became part owner of a motorcycle shop in Vicksburg for several years until he returned to his roots of servitude. Larry served as a police officer from 1971 - 1983 for the heart of the Mississippi Delta. During those years, Larry actively patrolled and provided protection for Sunflower and Inverness while later being appointed as the Assistant Chief of Police for Itta Bena.
Larry later changed careers but held on to his blue collared work ethic while he worked as a maintenance shift supervisor for Yazoo Valley Oil Mill until 1994. Larry's last job was with Agriliance where he was a maintenance and field analyzer until his retirement in 2015.
Even through all of his occupational endeavors, Larry never clocked out as there was always work to do at home. In order to thoroughly provide for his family, Larry spent a majority of his off-duty hours hunting, fishing, and working in his garden. Because of Larry, food was always on the table whether it was purchased or grown and gathered by himself. Larry loved every meal that his wife placed in front of him, always with a tall glass of milk. More than this, Larry certainly loved his wife.
In the spare time he did have for leisurely activities, Larry and Edna Joyce enjoyed camping at Grenada Lake, traveling to various conventions, and watching old western shows together.
Throughout his life, Larry's most notable hobby was his interest and fascination with modern technology. He enjoyed learning how to use different computer softwares, taking various electronics apart, building his own radio towers from the ground, videoing and capturing important family events, and teaching others about the innovations of technology. Through this, Larry took on the pastime that was most significant in his life: ham radio. Relatives recall Larry learning how to use this mode of communication as early as 1979. Larry enjoyed speaking with and trading callsigns and QSL cards with people all across the world. Over time, Larry received his top tier title as "Amateur Extra License" and collected over 7,000 QSL cards.
Although Larry loved to communicate with others, he definitely cherished his time with his family. He loved seeing everyone at family reunions, holiday and birthday gatherings, and just in general. When with his family and friends, Larry was a man of very few words, but when he spoke, everyone listened. Larry enjoyed sharing his accomplishments with his loved ones in hopes that it would inspire them to work hard for what they want in life as he did for 80 years.
