Obituary

Samuel Horatio Burns, Jr., 87, passed from this life to the next on January 30, 2019. He was comforted in his home in Sidon under the care of family and hospice after a long time struggle with cancer.

He was affectionately referred to as "Sambo" by family and friends and sometimes "Bob" at work. Sambo was born in Sidon to Samuel and Hope (Marion) Burns on October 8, 1931. He was married to the love of his life, his wife of 35 years, Polly (Williams) Burns. He became an apprentice welder at 15 years old and mastered the trade of welding through employment at Barrentine Manufacturing, Ingalls Shipyard, Gray's Welding and Nichols Welding Shop. Although he referred to himself as a "dobber", he was well respected as "one of the best welders around" by many Delta area farmers.

To Sam, there was only one kind of music, "good 'ol real country music" by Merle Haggard and Hank Williams, Sr., although Alan Jackson and George Strait "could sing alright." Sam Burns was an avid deer hunter during fall and winter. He never missed an opportunity to share a deer story or listen to others' deer hunting stories. Two of his most prized possessions were the two deer mounts he proudly displayed in his home. In the spring and summer, you could frequently hear of his "trotlines" escapades. His favorite activity was target practice with his grandson. Sam boasted many times of the shooting talent his grandson certainly inherited from him. Sambo was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a daughter, Sammy Evelyn (Burns) Pusser.

He is survived by sons, James Newton "Nudy" Burns (Evelyn) of Sidon, and Howard Burns (Pam) of Carrollton; his beloved little 'ol girl, Becky Burns of Sidon; three grandchildren, Frank Busby of Vicksburg, Mary Busby of Vicksburg, and his favorite partner, Jeremiah Burns of Carrollton; and one great grandchild, Aidyn James Busby of Vicksburg.
