Obituary

OPAL FLOYD LOVETT

“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:10,30.

On August 23, 2026, Opal Floyd Lovett passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 98, joining her husband, Billy Joe Lovett, in heaven.

We will celebrate her life on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Ruleville Baptist Church with Reverend Thomas Anderson officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM immediately prior to the service until 11:00 AM. Burial will be in the Linn Baptist Cemetery following the service.

Opal was born August 20, 1928 in Sunflower County to William Turner Floyd and Lois Mitchell Floyd. She was raised in the Linn community and graduated from Linn High School.

One of her early dreams was to be a nurse. In May of 1950, she realized that dream when she graduated from nursing school and began her nursing career at North Sunflower County Hospital where she worked in various positions for 30 years.

In August of 1950, she married the love of her life, W.B. (Billy Joe) Lovett. They made their home in Ruleville, MS. Opal and Billy Joe had four children: Carolyn Jean, an infant who lived only one day, Bonnie Buie, Betty Campbell, and Bill Lovett, who passed away at a young age. She wanted to be remembered as a woman of faith, and a woman who loved her family dearly.

She did love her family well and enjoyed spending time with them. She had a gift for hospitality and was generous with her time and her resources. Her ability to provide delicious meals was a legacy that everyone who was a recipient of this talent will remember.

She loved her home and yard and had a passion for roses. She grew roses and beautiful flowers as long as she was able to do so.

She belonged to the Garden Club and the Twentieth Century club. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Every Christmas, as a member of the DAR, she loved collecting and delivering Christmas gifts for the veterans at the Veterans Nursing Home in Kosciusko. She did this for many years with the help of her very good friend, Kathryn Arant.

She was a member of Ruleville Baptist Church for 76 years. She loved her church and the many friends she made there over the years, but most of all, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She served in the Primary Department for many years teaching young elementary age children about Jesus. Every summer she volunteered to teach Vacation Bible School, working with children from all over Ruleville. She also enjoyed serving on various committees including finance and decorating committees during her time at Ruleville Baptist Church.

In 1964, Billy Joe and Opal opened a new business in Ruleville; Lovett Auto and Tractor Parts. After her nursing career ended, Opal began a new career as overseer of the financial operations of this business where she worked faithfully until she finally retired in 2022 at the age of 94.

Opal is survived by her daughter Bonnie and her husband Brad, and their children Erin Holben (Andrew), Lauren McClure (Mitch), and Brandon Altieri (Heather); her daughter Betty and her husband Tommy, and their children Jay Campbell (Jennifer), Ben Campbell (Kati), Andrew Campbell (Brianna), and Chris Campbell (Katherine).

Opal is also survived by her 15 great-grandchildren. Bonnie (Josh, Audrey, Luke, and AnnaGrace, Tucker, Jack, and Crew, Tyler and Avery); Betty (Caroline and Isla Jane, Luke, Okley, and Maggie, and Oliver)

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Carolyn, her son Bill, and her husband Billy Joe as well as two brothers, Billy Floyd and Frank Floyd. She leaves one brother, Roger Floyd (Mary Alice) in Greenwood, MS.

Pallbearers will be her beloved grandchildren: Jay Campbell, Andrew Campbell, Chris Campbell, Brandon Altieri, Andrew Holben, and Mitch McClure. Honorary Pallbearers will be Ross Hunt, Billy Williams, Jimbo Eastland, and Clint Weaver.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Ruleville Baptist Church or Gideons International.
