Rome
Services for Larry Neal Grimes will be held Saturday, December 7, 2019 11:00 A.M.at Holly Grove M.B. Church in Drew, MS.
Larry passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at his home at the age of 67. Larry was born November 24, 1951, in Greenville, MS, to the late Issac and Delvene Grimes. He was a retired Vietnam military veteran of the United States, Correctional Officer for twenty years at the Mississippi State Penitentiary and a former Deputy Sheriff of Sunflower County for twelve years. In his free time, Larry enjoyed spending time at the Po Monkey's Lounge and loved to make art from his treasures. Larry was a folktale artist and he never met a stranger; everyone he met became family. He always had a joke to tell, a story from the heart, and he loved showing off his coins to reminisce about the stories behind them. He also loved flea markets and auctions.
Larry had an almost adept knowledge about Black History. More importantly, he was a kind and loving man who always helped those in need. Larry was a great husband, father, and friend who always took care of those dear to him. After 42 years, he was united for the first time, with a long-lost daughter, Laura Horton. They were able to form a special and loving bond over these last eight years together. Eight years was not nearly enough time for her. It is the simplest things the family will miss such as how Larry also loved playing with his grandbabies.
He is preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Ray, Carter Grimes, Timmy Grimes, and Kenny Grimes, a sister, Gloria Jean Huskey, and a granddaughter, LaNiayah Grimes.
Larry is survived by his beloved ex-wife Sharon Catchings of Drew; two sisters, Mary McKenzie of McCee, MS, and Nettie Carol Halley of Pearl River; three brothers, Gene Grimes of Boyle, MS, Jimmy Grimes and James Grimes, both of Greenville, MS; four sons, Neal Grimes of Ackerman, MS, Larry Grimes, Jr., Latron Grimes, and Kori Harris of Drew, MS; four daughters, Laura (Scott) Horton of Merigold, Pam (Karen) Watson of Ackerman, MS, Melissa Bernard of Southaven, MS, and Andreanna Perkins of Drew, MS Twenty-seven grandkids and two great grandsons.
