John "Shorty"
Holloway
Jun 23, 1947 — Jul 29, 2026
Itta Bena
John Rodney "Shorty" Holloway transitioned peacefully from St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, to his forever home on July 29, 2026, at the age of 79. He was surrounded by family when he left this earth to join his heavenly Father, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Rodney was born on June 23, 1947, in Alexander City, Alabama, the son of the late Melvin Ross Holloway and Mary Nell Graham Holloway. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan Hall Holloway of Itta Bena, MS; daughters: Melissa Hall of
Eupora, MS, Tyra Lusk (Lee) of Carrollton, MS, and Sonya Nichols (Philip) of Terry, MS; and Juan Villasana (Rachel), whom he and Susan claimed as their own; his sister, Brenda Holloway, a niece and 4 nephews of Alabama.
Rodney was a grandfather of five grandchildren, two step grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his parents, sister, Beulah Ann Hay, and son-in-law, John Hall of Eupora, MS.
Shorty, as most knew him, grew up in Alabama, but made his life in the MS Delta at a very young age. He and Susan Hall married on August 14, 1998, and the two of them made Itta Bena their home. He was an avid outdoorsman to say the least, and he loved hunting and fishing. He worked as a welder, retiring after many years of service from Stribling Equipment in Greenwood, MS, now known as Thompson Machinery. After retiring, he opened his own business, Holloway Welding Service. He was well known for his excellent skills in this rigorous trade. He used his talents to serve numerous people, primarily farmers, in the area and beyond. He was the one to call when you had a welding job to be done quickly and done right.
Shorty was a man of integrity, trust, resilience, humility, dedication, and love. He will be remembered for his spirit of endurance (without complaint), his stubbornness (Holloway temper), at times, but more so for his love for God's creation, sweet tea, his friends and his family.
His life celebration will be held Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Williams and Lord Funeral Home, 301 Madison Ave, Greenwood, Mississippi. Visitation will be 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm; celebration to begin at 2:00 pm. There will be no graveside service. He will be laid in his final resting place, next to his parents in Alabama, at a later date. Long time friend, Pastor Glen Johnson, will officiate the service.
We ask in lieu of flowers that donations in his memory be made to: MS Foundation of Wildlife Fishery Parks & Marine - foundationmwfp.com
