Obituary

Chief Henry Harmon Burden, 84, of Greenwood, MS, died Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at his residence. Visitation will be 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday at Williams & Lord Funeral Home with graveside services immediately following in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton. Rev. James Woodall will officiate.

Chief Burden was born July 11, 1939 in Carroll County, MS, to James Vardaman Burden and Vallie Mae Noland Burden. He was a member of Abundant Life Church of God and was a 1958 graduate of J.Z. George High School. He proudly served in the United States Army. He was the assistant police chief for the Greenwood Police Department, where he was the first narcotics officer and after his 24 year tenure with GPD, he became head of security at National Picture Frame, and eventually retired as head of security for the Carroll County Schools.  He enjoyed fox hunting and spending time with his family. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Deaton Burden; son, Bradley Burden; brothers, Arvel Burden and James K. Burden; sister, Patricia Hawkins; and his parents.

He is survived by his son, Michael Shane Burden of Greenwood, MS; his daughter, Candi Lucas and husband Charles of Black Hawk, MS; his only grandson, Ian Conner Mills of Black Hawk, MS; and his brother, Leslie Burden and wife Rachael of Lexington, MS.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mississippi Hunting Dog Association, 778 Macedonia Rd, Petal, MS 39465. Military rites will be conducted by the Keesler-Hamrick-Gillespie American Legion Post 29.
