Obituary

Douglas Eugene "Gene" Henderson, Sr. , 88, of Greenwood, MS, died Saturday, January 22, 2022 at his residence. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williams & Lord Funeral Home with visitation 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. Hal Clark will officiate.

He was born May 27, 1933 in Webster County, MS, to Avner Pinkham Henderson and Mary Alice Fair Henderson. He resided in Greenwood, MS, most of his life. He was the sales manager for Henderson Building Supply for over 30 years before retirement. He enjoyed fishing with the boys on Saturday afternoon.  He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenwood and served in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Audrey Elaine Smith; brother, Jerry Wayne Henderson; great-grandson, Thomas Horn III; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elena Frances Chaffin Henderson of Greenwood, MS; two sons, Douglas Eugene Henderson, Jr. of Sardis, MS, and Stacy Allen Henderson of Sardis, MS; brother, James "Jimmy" Henderson of Greenwood, MS; grandchildren, Cynthia Renee Overstreet and husband Chris, Tommy Horn and wife Nicole, and Dustin Henderson and wife Jody; six great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will his grandson and great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Sproles, Johnny Sproles, David Welch, and employees of Norris Book Binding.

Military rites will be conducted by Keesler-Hamrick-Gillespie American Legion Post 29 Honor Guard.

Williams & Lord Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
