Darlene Joy
Willingham
Feb 6, 1940 — Aug 27, 2025
Drew
Today, with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who left us peacefully after a courageous three-year struggle. Through it all, she remained full of grace, humor, and resilience — never once letting hardship dim her light.
Darlene Joy Willingham, age 85, died on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at her home in Drew, surrounded by her family. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Williams & Lord Funeral Home in Ruleville with visitation 10 a.m. until service time. Rev. Larry Choucolie will officiate. Interment will follow in Drew Cemetery.
She was born on February 6, 1940 to the late Daniel Leslie Waldrep and Nannie Pearl Waldrep. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Moody Willingham, her two brothers, Lester and Butch Waldrep, and her three sisters, Doris Cole, Sybil White, and Barbara Topper. She is survived by two daughters, Cherry (Chuck) Roberts of Florence, MS, and Georgia (Bobby) Blackwell of Drew, MS, her son, James (Karina) Willingham of Lake Worth, FL, as well as seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Her legacy is etched deeply in the love she gave so freely, her unshakeable faith in God, and her joyful embrace of life. Throughout her life, she was a beacon of love and kindness, always putting her family first. She taught us the true meaning of unconditional love — not through words, but through her actions. Her warmth, patience, and unwavering support shaped each of us, showing how love could heal, inspire, and unite. Whether it was a comforting embrace, a word of encouragement, or simply her quiet presence, she made us feel seen, valued, and deeply cherished. Her legacy lives on in the lessons she imparted and the love she shared, which will continue to guide us for generations to come. She had an unbreakable spirit, always finding beauty in the world around her. When asked how she was doing, even in her toughest days, she'd smile and say, "I'm better." That optimism defined her. She was witty, feisty, sweet, and had a laugh that could light up a room. Her sense of humor was sharp and ever-present — a gift to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She taught us that strength and tenderness can live side by side.
Her greatest joy in life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her endless happiness. She cherished every moment with them, and they were truly the light of her life.
We are deeply grateful to the caregivers, Pamela McCoy, Ella Carr, Clydia Townsend, and Waynette Jackson, who provided her with compassionate care and comfort. Thank you to North Sunflower Hospice nurses for their love, devotion and tireless care that gave our mother dignity, warmth, and peace in her final years.
Pallbearers are Kyle Blackwell, Justin Roberts, Cameron Roberts, Travis Willingham, John Michael Ryan, and Hunter Box.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing she is at peace. Her love will remain with us always — a light that will never fade. She will be greatly missed, but her spirit will forever be in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Drew Baptist Church, PO Box 8, Drew, MS 38737.
