Charles Whittington Hughes, 74, of Gulfport, MS, formerly of Greenwood, MS, died Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. Visitation will be Monday, August 5, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 1:40 p.m. at Williams and Lord Funeral Home with a graveside service that will immediately follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Bro. Wilton Neal will officiate.
He was born August 11, 1949, in Greenwood, MS, to John Edward Hughes and Joyce Whittington Hughes. He served a tour of duty in the Army, worked as a cattleman, cowboy, and correctional officer, and was a lifelong Mississippi State fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Linda Blair Hughes.
Charles is survived by his son, Charles Cameron Hughes and wife Crystal Kay Hughes of Santa Rosa, FL; daughter, Mary Katherine "Kitty" Cook of Biloxi, MS; brother, John E. "Toby" Hughes, Jr. of Jackson, MS; four grandchildren, Andrew Cook, Phillip Cook, Cameron Patrick Hughes, and Kya Anna Hughes; and one great-grandchild, Leia Grace Cook.
Military rites will be conducted by Keesler-Hambrick -Gillespie American Legion Post 29.
Williams & Lord Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
