Obituary

Carl Shelton passed away peacefully at Greenwood Leflore Hospital on Monday, June 27, 2022.

Carl was born on August 28, 1938 in Big Hungry, Mississippi. His parents died when he was a young boy, and Carl was forced to grow up faster than any child ever should. He bounced around living at his older sibling's homes until he was old enough to join the United States Army. He was a Truckmaster and carried an Expert Carbine Badge according to his DD-214. Once he left the Army, he joined the Reserves. He was very proud to have served his country and would probably have continued if it were not for a blast that went off in his active duty years that left him nearly deaf. He was honorably discharged in 1967. He would also tell you that he never collected any unemployment in his entire life. There was never a trade that he picked up that he couldn't master. Over the years, he worked as a truck driver, a roofer, an engineer, a carpenter and an auto mechanic to name a few. He was roofing a house one day in Greenwood, Mississippi when his future wife, Ruby Geraldine Walls got off the school bus in front. He said he knew immediately he was going to marry that girl. His resume included the companies Medart, J.J. Ferguson and Randall Textron. He worked for "the man" until later in life when he decided to go to work for himself when he started a mobile home repair and set up business, C&M Mobile Homes. He always said that he may lose a job on Friday afternoon but by Monday morning he would have something else. It may not have been what he wanted but it enabled him to provide for his family, because he had married that Walls girl in November 1959.

Carl and Ruby settled in Carroll County, Mississippi near the Jefferson Community in the 70's. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He taught all of his children how to do the same. It wasn't so much about the sport, but it was about the time he spent with them. He was their biggest fan no matter what they did. He loved his children, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never met a stranger and quickly made friends with anyone who needed his help.

The most important and beloved relationship in his life was with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Right up until the very end, he was talking about Jesus with the staff at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Once he retired, he had witness cards made with his name and phone number on them that read - "If you meet me and forget me, you have lost nothing. If you meet Christ and forget him, then you've lost everything." He truly meant that. He knew that being an effective witness for Christ was not about him. His life would indicate that nothing ever was. It was about all the people in his life. He loved each and every one.

Carl was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Carrollton, Mississippi where at times he was the music director, Sunday school teacher and even drove the church bus.
